CMS Requirement of Dependent Social Security Numbers
Apr 15, 2009
Effective January 1, 2009
, all Group Health Plans and Third Party Administrators are required to provide the Center for Medicare Services (CMS) with the Social Security numbers of each enrolled member/participant. This is a result of the SCHIP Extension Act of 2007
and is meant to help CMS determine whether the group plan should be the primary payer for any Medicare entitled enrollees.
Aetna Underwriting will be requesting this information for the employee's spouse. Dependent social security information will not be required with new business submissions. Dependent data will still need to be collected, and efforts through membership are under way. However, Aetna would like to encourage everyone to collect as much dependent information as possible during the enrollment process.
