Law Also Changes Deadline for Filing Subsequent Forms W-2 to January 31

A new law, effective as of December 18, 2015, requires employers to include an identifying number for an employee on Form W-2, rather than the employee's Social Security account number, as previously required.

Note: The current deadlines for 2015 Forms W-2 are: February 1 for distributing Forms W-2 to employees; February 29 for filing using paper Forms W-2; and March 31 for filing electronically.

New Deadline for Filing Forms W-2 in Subsequent Years
Additionally, under another provision of the law, applicable to returns and statements relating to calendar years beginning after 2015, Forms W-2 must be filed on or before January 31 of the year following the calendar year to which such returns relate. Thus, the due date for filing 2016 Forms W-2 with the Social Security Administration is now January 31, 2017, whether filing by paper or electronically.
