Pending Period Change for Life & Disability
May 24, 2016
Anthem is making the following changes to bring their Evidence of Insurability (EOI) practices in line with industry standards:
The Life and Disability Medical Evidence Underwriting unit will now email group administrators to tell them a member’s application is pended when Anthem requires additional information for EOI processing. This makes it vitally important to provide group email addresses on new case paperwork. If anthem does’t have an email address, they will not be able to notify the group administrator about pended member applications. The email to group administrators will not contain any medical information or specifics of why the application is pended. It will only let them know the application is pended. And the member has 14 days to provide additional information.
Anthem has been giving applicants 45 days to respond, after they send them notice that they require additional information to process their EOI for life/disability coverage – the industry standard is 14.
Starting May 20, 2016, applicants who provide incomplete Evidence of Insurability or Insurability Information Request forms will have 14 days to respond from the date of Anthem's letter, which tells them what additional information they need. When they require a paramedical exam and when they request copies of medical records, members will have 30 days to respond.
In the past, Anthem has sent an additional letter at the end of 45 days to tell the member the file was closed. Now, the initial letter they send will tell them the file will be closed after 14 days, if they do not receive a response. Anthem expects the shorter response period will lead to fewer lapsed applications.
