Retinal screening photography provides a closer look at the inside of the eye. It is performed by an eye care professional and can be used to identify or monitor conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, vascular disease, and macular degeneration. It also may be used to compare year-over-year changes in the retina and optic nerve.
The retinal screening photography benefit is a buy-up option available with UnitedHealthcare vision plans. UHC offers two ways to provide this benefit to employees:
The Centers for Disease Control National Diabetes Report for 2014 says that 9.3 percent of adults in the United States have diabetes. According to the UnitedHealthcare Patient-by-Condition report for the past 12 months, 28 percent of UnitedHealthcare membership has diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, hypertension, hypertensive retinopathy, vascular disease, or high cholesterol. This is an important benefit to offer employees.
An advantage to offering this buy-up option through UnitedHealthcare is that all those with diabetes are covered.
