Migration to Express Scripts (ESI) to Begin July 2010

The sale of Anthem's pharmacy benefit manager, NextRx, and Anthem's specialty pharmacy, Precision Rx Specialty Solutions, to Express Scripts (ESI) was completed December 1, 2009. The 10-year alliance with ESI will benefit both groups and members by offering the best practices from both companies:
  • Improved operating efficiencies, which will allow Anthem to provide broader services and plan offerings
  • Increased experience, to better integrate medical and pharmacy disease management programs
  • Improved data analytics for your clients
  • Competitive pricing

ESI will provide claims processing, management of the retail network, mail-order fulfillment and specialty pharmacies. Anthem will continue to manage benefit designs, formularies/drug lists, data analytics, disease management and clinical pharmacy programs. And your account will continue to be managed by your health plan as it is today.

There will be no changes to member ID cards, current phone numbers for Customer Service or formularies/drug lists. The home delivery service and specialty pharmacies will continue to operate as they are today until the NextRX and PRxSS brands are retired throughout 2010. In addition, the NextRx website will be retired and the ESI website will be fully integrated into the health plan website (single sign-on) by the end of 2010.

Beginning July 1, 2010, Anthem expects to start migrating groups to the Express Scripts pharmacy operating platform. Express Scripts will begin processing prescription drug claims once accounts have been migrated. The health plan will continue managing clients' prescription drug programs.

A California Employer mailing is going out during the month of June, notifying members about the change from NextRx to Express Scripts Pharmacy.  Employer Letter
