At no additional cost, UnitedHealthcare includes a travel and lodging benefit for fully insured customers with UnitedHealthcare of California HMO, UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company (UHIC) UnitedHealthcare Benefits Plan of California (UHCBPCA) licenses, who are sitused in California, effective Sept. 1, 2022.
As you are aware, UnitedHealthcare is required to follow state insurance laws with respect to covered services. Although travel and lodging benefits are not included as part of most state insurance mandates, California has approved coverage for travel and lodging for California sitused customers with a plan written on either a UnitedHealthcare of California, UHIC or UHCBPCA license beginning with services on or after Sept. 1, 2022.
A travel and lodging coverage rider, which applies to your group health plans on the impacted licenses, will be sent with your UnitedHealthcare Certificate of Coverage at the time of your plan renewal.
The benefit applies to covered enrollee expenses for travel and lodging when the enrollee is required to travel out of state to obtain a covered service not available to them in their resident state because of law or regulation.
The travel and lodging benefit provides for a maximum benefit of between $2,000 per year with a minimum travel distance of at least 50 miles or greater from the plan participant’s home address. This includes the required travel to obtain the service and lodging expenses of up to $50 per night for the enrollee or up to $100 per night if accompanied by another person. Reimbursements will be made in alignment with Internal Revenue Service’s guidelines so that this benefit will not generate a tax liability for the member.
The enrollee may submit receipts digitally on myuhc.com portal or call the number on their health plan ID card to obtain a form that may be submitted with receipts
