Special Enrollment for California Individual Mandate (SB 78)
California’s new Individual Mandate (SB 78) requires California residents to be enrolled in and maintain coverage for each month beginning in January 2020 or pay a penalty. The penalty amount may vary and coverage exemptions are available, please see the FTB’s webpage for more information.
To help residents avoid potential penalties, some California Small Group insurance carriers are allowing a one-time special enrollment period for employees and/or dependents who previously waived coverage in 2019 to come onto their employer sponsored plans effective January 1, 2020.
